Motivation
Motivation is a psychological force that initiates, guides, and sustains goal-directed behaviors. It is the internal process that gives behavior energy (intensity), direction (focus), and persistence (duration).
In simpler terms, motivation is what causes you to act — whether it's getting a glass of water to satisfy thirst or studying late to pursue a career goal.
Core Components of Motivation
- Activation: The decision to initiate a behavior (e.g., enrolling in a course).
- Direction: The path or strategy chosen to achieve a goal (e.g., studying a specific subject).
- Intensity: The amount of physical or mental effort put in (e.g., focused, deep work vs. distracted efforts).
- Persistence: How long you continue the behavior in the face of challenges (e.g., not giving up after setbacks).
Motivation is not constant. It fluctuates based on emotions, environment, energy levels, goals, and even hormones like dopamine.
Successful people don’t always feel motivated — they build systems, habits, and clarity of purpose to keep going when motivation fades.
