Stoicism

Stoicism is a philosophy of live originated in Ancient Greece around 300 BCE, founded by Zeno of Citium. It teaches resilience, self-control, and inner peace by focusing on what we can control and accepting what we cannot. It emphasizes virtues like wisdom, courage, justice, and temperance. Stoics believe that external circumstances are natural, it's our perception of them that causes suffering.

Some Key Stoic Concepts

  • Control what you can, accept what you can’t. Don’t waste energy on things outside your control (like other people’s actions or opinions).

  • Focus on your own virtue. True happiness comes from being a good person, not from external success or pleasure.

  • Negative visualization. Prepare for hardships by imagining worst-case scenarios, so you’re never caught off guard.

  • Amor fati (Love of fate). Instead of resisting reality, embrace whatever happens as an opportunity to grow.

  • Memento mori. Remembering that life is short helps prioritize what truly matters.
